Software Engineer Salary in Hong Kong: How to Set a Hiring Budget
A practical guide to budgeting for software engineers in Hong Kong using dated salary sources, role scope and total hiring cost.

Published Hong Kong job-ad data puts typical monthly pay for software roles between about HK$24,000 and HK$43,000, depending on the specialization. Jobsdb's August 2026 role pages put software engineers at HK$24,000-HK$34,000 a month.
Why we keep this page: we build Talent Summoner, an AI agent that turns a role brief into a ranked, evidence-backed shortlist from 200M+ public profiles — $39 a role, or $79/month if you hire every month, free to start with no credit card. It will not set or benchmark your pay. It is our product; every number below is sourced and stands on its own.
Start with the role, not the title
"Software engineer" describes very different jobs. Before reading any benchmark, write down:
- years of relevant experience and people-management scope;
- backend, frontend, platform, data or mobile focus;
- production ownership and on-call expectations; and
- office, hybrid or remote arrangement.
A senior backend engineer in a regulated environment is not comparable with an early-career product engineer.
Typical monthly pay for Hong Kong software roles
| Role | Typical monthly salary | Scope it usually implies |
|---|---|---|
| Software Engineer | HK$24,000-HK$34,000 | Broadest title; junior work included |
| Frontend Developer | HK$26,000-HK$29,000 | Interface work, agency or in-house |
| Full Stack Developer | HK$33,000-HK$41,000 | A feature end to end |
| Backend Developer | HK$33,000-HK$43,000 | Services, data, regulated finance |

Read these as advertised salaries, not paid compensation — ranges employers disclosed in job ads. Jobsdb also states that some disclosed salaries include benefits and others do not, and that this varies by employer, so they are not a like-for-like base-salary comparison.
One figure in the same dataset sits above the table: Jobsdb puts Central and Western at about HK$41,700 a month in August 2026, over the HK$34,000 ceiling of the citywide range. The two figures are different cuts of the same Jobsdb data, not a range and an outlier. The citywide range covers the whole market, including smaller local firms and support-heavy roles; the district figure is an average pulled up by the banks, trading firms and fintech employers in Central, Sheung Wan and Wan Chai. Budget from the district figure if your office is in that belt. Our how to hire a software engineer in Hong Kong page reads the same data district by district.
A second checkable reference: the Morgan McKinley Hong Kong Salary Guide 2026 puts backend developers around HK$40,000 a month and full stack developers around HK$50,000. Recruiter benchmarks skew senior and towards larger employers, hence the gap. Adecco and Robert Half publish deeper banded guides, but behind a download form — read those yourself rather than citing them.
Build the hiring budget
Monthly loaded cost = monthly salary + guaranteed bonus and allowances + benefits + employer MPF + amortized recruiting costThe employer cost budgets miss most often is MPF: 5% of monthly salary, capped at HK$1,500 a month, per the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority, because relevant income counts only up to HK$30,000. The flat cap applies from HK$30,000 up, the full 5% below it — HK$1,300 on a HK$26,000 frontend salary. So any row above is computable: HK$43,000 at the top of the backend range plus HK$1,500 is HK$44,500 a month before medical cover and bonus.
Write the brief before you publish the range
Move the range only for reasons you can name: higher scope, scarce systems or domain experience, relocation and on-call demands, or a hard deadline. Never use a "market average" to hide an unclear role.
Then write a short internal brief — target level and range, must-have evidence, acceptable adjacent backgrounds, interview stages and decision owners, location and working pattern — and use it both when sourcing and when reviewing, so the decision stays tied to the role rather than to whichever candidate negotiates first. For a worked version, with districts, language requirements and visa routes, start from how to hire a software engineer, or browse other roles under how to hire.
Include recruiting cost
Record sourcing time, agency fees, job advertising, assessment tools and interview time, then compare them with the price of a sourcing workflow. Price the delay too: the cost of vacancy calculator turns an unfilled seat into a weekly number, our cost per hire guide keeps that calculation consistent, and our information technology hiring page covers technical searches.
Hand Talent Summoner that brief and it returns a ranked shortlist with evidence for each match at $39 a role — a known sourcing line before you start.
Trade-offs, stated plainly: we will not set compensation or benchmark it for you — that is the work above; no contact-credit database — you reach candidates through your own email or LinkedIn; no always-on pipeline; no ATS integration today.
When a paid salary guide is the right call
- A formal compensation review → band-setting needs percentiles across seniority levels; a paid recruiter guide earns its download form.
- A visa application needing a defensible benchmark → a regulated employer proving prevailing market terms should cite a guide it has licensed, not a blog table.
- Applicants already come to you → take the figures above and stop; do not buy sourcing you will not use.
FAQ
Are those figures what people actually get paid?
No. They are advertised ranges from job ads: what employers offered, not what candidates accepted. Jobsdb notes that some disclosed salaries include benefits and others do not, and that this varies by employer, so the figures are not a like-for-like base-salary comparison.
Which Hong Kong district pays software engineers the most?
Central and Western, at an HK$41,700 monthly average on Jobsdb in August 2026 — a district average lifted by banks and fintech, not the citywide top.
How much MPF does the employer pay on top of salary?
5% of monthly salary, capped at HK$1,500 a month because relevant income counts only up to HK$30,000, per the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority.
Can Talent Summoner set the salary for my role?
No. It sources candidates and ranks shortlists. Compensation benchmarking, offers and legal obligations stay with the employer.
Once the range is set, the question is who is available at it. Start free, no credit card, and see the shortlist your budget reaches.
