How to hire in Australia

How to hire a product designer in Australia

Australia's product designers cluster around a handful of product companies in Sydney and Melbourne, and the senior ones are mostly already employed. This guide covers what the role pays here, where the experienced people sit, and how sponsorship works now the Skills in Demand visa has replaced the old 482.

What it pays

What a product designer costs in Australia

Australian salaries are quoted as an annual base plus superannuation, and the sources disagree in a useful way: job-ad data shows what employers offer, while self-reported data shows what experienced people actually earn. Read both before you set the band.

Figures checked August 2026. SEEK's band comes from salaries disclosed on job ads, so it tracks what employers are offering; Talent.com's figures come from reported salaries, which skew towards experienced people — that is why its median sits higher. All of these are base figures: the 12% super guarantee is paid on top, so budget roughly A$13,000 above a A$110,000 base before you start.

Where the talent sits

Where Australia's product designers work

Sydney — the product company headquarters

Canva is headquartered in Sydney with around 5,500 staff globally as of 2024, and Atlassian — founded in Sydney by two University of New South Wales course mates — counts more than 12,000 employees. Between them they anchor the country's deepest pool of product designers, and their alumni turn up on design teams across the city.

Melbourne — the second cluster

Culture Amp's Melbourne headquarters is home to teams across product, engineering, design and operations, and Airwallex was founded in Melbourne in 2015 before going global. The city runs a genuine product scene of its own, not an overflow of Sydney's.

One title, two trades

Australia's official occupation classification has no product designer code. Digital designers sit under Web Designer (ANZSCO 232414) and Multimedia Designer (232413), while designers of physical products sit under Industrial Designer (232312) — a different occupation entirely. An ad that just says product designer collects both, so say which you mean.

The agency and freelance layer

Search for product designers in Australia and most of what you find is agencies and freelance marketplaces — Clutch alone ranks dozens of Australian product design firms as of August 2026. That layer is easy to find and priced by the project. The in-house employee pool is quieter, and mostly not applying to anything.

The senior end is where it gets expensive

Talent.com puts entry level at about A$82,500 and experienced at about A$140,600 a year, and Indeed's spread runs to A$170,945 at the top — checked August 2026. The market prices experience steeply, which is another way of saying the senior end is employed and knows it.

Visas and work rights

Work rights and visas for hiring a product designer in Australia

Most product design hires in Australia are local — citizens and permanent residents need no sponsorship at all. But if your best candidate is offshore, these are the routes as they stand after the December 2024 changes.

The candidate may already be free to work

Australian citizens and permanent residents can start without any application, and many other visa holders already carry full work rights. Ask about work rights in the first call — it changes your timeline by months, not weeks.

Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482) — Core Skills stream

The employer-sponsored route that replaced the old Temporary Skill Shortage visa from December 2024. The occupation must be on the Core Skills Occupation List — digital product designers usually map to Web Designer (ANZSCO 232414) or Multimedia Designer (232413), both listed for this stream — the salary must meet the market rate and at least the Core Skills Income Threshold, A$79,423 for nominations lodged between 1 July 2026 and 30 June 2027, and the candidate needs at least one year of relevant experience. Stay is up to four years. Source: Home Affairs Skills in Demand visa pages, last updated 29 July 2026.

Skills in Demand visa — Specialist Skills stream

The stream for higher earners: nominations must meet the Specialist Skills Income Threshold, A$146,576 for applications lodged between 1 July 2026 and 30 June 2027. Only relevant if you are hiring a very senior designer or design leader above that line. Source: Home Affairs salary requirements page, last updated 1 July 2026.

Working Holiday visa (subclass 417)

Holders are 18 to 30 years old — up to 35 for some countries — and can normally work no more than six months with one employer without permission. That makes it workable for contract cover, not a route to a permanent design hire. Source: Home Affairs Working Holiday visa page, last updated 9 December 2024.

These pages were read in August 2026, and the schemes and income thresholds change — the thresholds are indexed every July. Check immi.homeaffairs.gov.au before relying on any of this, and take proper advice for a specific case — this is background, not legal advice.

How to run the search

How to actually run the search

Say which product designer you mean

End-to-end digital designer who runs research, flows and UI? Or an industrial designer shaping physical products? Australia's occupation codes treat these as different trades, and so does the talent market. Fix the scope and seniority first and the rest of the search gets shorter.

Set the band before the search

Quote base plus super, and be honest about seniority. A A$100,000 to A$120,000 band matches the middle of SEEK's job-ad data; the experienced end reports closer to A$140,600 on Talent.com. Advertising a mid-level band and hoping for a senior is the slowest way to run this search.

Make the portfolio walkthrough the interview

One shipped project, told end to end: the problem, the constraints, what they changed after research, and what happened after launch. Polished visuals are easy to buy; decision-making under real constraints is what you are actually hiring.

Search the market, not the applicants

The product designers you want are shipping someone else's roadmap and not reading job boards. Talent Summoner searches public professional profiles across the open market and ranks them against your brief, so you start from people who fit rather than people who applied.

Move in days, not weeks

The senior pool concentrates in Sydney and Melbourne and everyone shortlists the same people. When you find the right one, make the offer clean — base, super, start date — and make it quickly. A drawn-out process is a signal, and good designers read signals for a living.

FAQ

Questions Australian employers ask

What salary should I offer a product designer in Australia?

SEEK's job-ad data puts the typical band at A$100,000 to A$120,000 a year with a median of A$110,000, and Indeed's average across postings is A$110,566, both checked August 2026. Talent.com's reported salaries run higher — a median of A$125,500, with entry level about A$82,500 and experienced about A$140,600. All of these are base figures: employer superannuation of 12% is paid on top.

Do the advertised salaries include superannuation?

Australian salaries are normally quoted as base plus super. The super guarantee is 12% of the employee's earnings for the year from 1 July 2026, per the Australian Taxation Office — on a A$110,000 base that is A$13,200 on top. If a candidate names a package figure, check whether it includes super before you compare offers.

Can I sponsor a product designer from overseas?

Yes, through the Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482). In the Core Skills stream the occupation must be on the Core Skills Occupation List — digital product designers usually map to Web Designer (ANZSCO 232414) or Multimedia Designer (232413) — the salary must meet the market rate and at least A$79,423 for nominations lodged in the year from 1 July 2026, and the candidate needs at least one year of relevant experience. Stay is up to four years. Check immi.homeaffairs.gov.au for the current rules.

Is a product designer the same as a UX designer in Australia?

The titles overlap heavily. In Australian product companies, product designer usually means an end-to-end digital designer covering research, flows and interface work, where UX designer can mean a narrower research-and-flows role. The official occupation classification has no product designer code at all — digital roles sit under Web Designer or Multimedia Designer and physical products under Industrial Designer — so write the ad around the scope, not the title.

Where do experienced product designers work in Australia?

The deepest pool is in Sydney, anchored by Canva — headquartered there with around 5,500 staff globally — and Atlassian, with more than 12,000 employees. Melbourne runs the second cluster, with Culture Amp's headquarters housing product and design teams and Airwallex founded there in 2015. Much of the visible market is agencies and freelancers, so the in-house people are mostly not applying to anything.
