How to hire in Hong Kong

How to hire an operations manager in Hong Kong

'Operations manager' in Hong Kong covers at least five different jobs — bank branch ops, fund ops, IT and data-centre ops, retail ops, and the logistics ops the title suggests elsewhere. This guide covers what each end of the market pays, where the talent physically sits, and how to write a brief that filters the flood.

What it pays

What an operations manager costs in Hong Kong

The spread on this title is wide because the title itself is wide. Advertised averages sit around the mid-thirties; specialist logistics and finance-ops roles run well above. Anchor your budget to the vertical, not to the title.

Senior finance-operations roles price far above every band here — if that is what you are hiring, benchmark against finance salaries, not this table.

Where the talent sits

Where Hong Kong operations talent actually sits

Banks' operations centres in Kowloon East

Since the late 2010s the banks have moved operations out of Central — Citi consolidated 3,200 staff into its Kwun Tong tower, and others followed. Branch ops, settlements, and fund operations people cluster in this corridor, and finance is the single biggest vertical among live operations-manager ads.

The Kwai Chung–Tsing Yi port belt

Hong Kong's container terminals anchor the logistics-operations pool, and the government is releasing further logistics land nearby through 2027. Jobsdb's August 2026 data prices Kwai Tsing operations managers at about HK$48,250 a month — a real, distinct market from office ops.

The logistics and trading sector broadly

Logistics alone employed about 171,500 people in Hong Kong on 2023 government figures — 4.6% of total employment — with trading and logistics together long one of the city's pillar industries. Supply-chain ops people here usually carry titles like logistics manager or supply chain manager rather than plain operations manager.

Startup and scale-up business operations

The dedicated startup biz-ops pool is genuinely small — InvestHK's 2025 survey counted about 5,200 startups employing roughly 20,000 people in total. Most companies hiring a first biz-ops manager end up poaching from consulting or banking operations instead.

Visas and work permits

Visa routes for hiring an operations manager in Hong Kong

Operations hires in Hong Kong are mostly local, and many roles carry cross-border scope into the Greater Bay Area rather than relocation. If your best candidate is not a permanent resident, these are the routes.

The candidate may already be free to work

Permanent residents, people on unconditional stay, and some dependant visa holders can start without any application. Ask this in the first call — it changes your timeline by weeks.

General Employment Policy (GEP)

The standard employment visa. You need a confirmed job offer, the job has to be one that cannot readily be taken up by the local workforce, and the package must be broadly in line with the prevailing market level in Hong Kong. Approved professionals normally get an initial stay of 36 months, or the length of the contract if that is shorter. Source: Immigration Department GEP page, last updated 16 April 2026.

Top Talent Pass Scheme (TTPS)

The candidate applies for this themselves, and no job offer is required. Category A covers people who earned HK$2.5 million or more in the year before applying; Categories B and C cover graduates of listed universities. If your candidate already holds a TTPS visa, you can hire them much like a local. Source: Immigration Department TTPS page, last updated 10 July 2026.

IANG — graduates of Hong Kong degree programmes

Covers non-local graduates of full-time locally accredited degree programmes in Hong Kong. Fresh graduates applying within six months of graduating do not need a job offer; those applying later need a confirmed offer at degree-holder level on market terms. Source: Immigration Department IANG page, last updated 29 April 2026.

These pages were read in August 2026 and the schemes do change. Check immd.gov.hk before relying on any of this, and take proper advice for a specific case — this is background, not legal advice.

How to run the search

How to actually run the search

Lead the brief with the vertical

The bare title floods you with wrong-vertical applicants — bank ops, data-centre ops and warehouse ops people all hold it. Put the vertical in the first line ('e-commerce fulfilment operations', 'fund operations') and name the systems you run, whether that is a WMS and TMS or a settlement stack.

Scope the Greater Bay Area honestly

Many Hong Kong ops seats are the control tower for mainland factories and 3PLs. If the role manages cross-border vendors, say so, state the mainland travel cadence, and expect to need Mandarin — for purely local operations, Cantonese and English is the standard ask.

Say the on-site terms plainly

Port, warehouse and branch operations are on-site and often shift-based, and Hong Kong employers lead the world on office mandates — a 2024 Morgan McKinley survey found 91% pushing more in-office presence. If you can offer any genuine flexibility, it is a real differentiator; if you cannot, say so up front.

Search the market, not the applicants

The operations manager who already runs a floor like yours is employed and not looking. Talent Summoner searches public professional profiles across the open market and ranks them against your brief, so you start from people who fit rather than people who applied.

Move in days, not weeks

Good ops people interview rarely and get counter-offered hard — their employers know exactly what breaks when they leave. Keep the loop short and the offer decisive.

FAQ

Questions Hong Kong employers ask

What salary should I offer an operations manager in Hong Kong?

As of August 2026, Indeed Hong Kong puts the all-industries advertised average at about HK$33,300 a month, Jobsdb's district data runs up to about HK$60,000 in Eastern District, and the Morgan McKinley 2026 guide prices logistics and operations managers at HK$40,000 to HK$60,000 with a median of HK$50,000. The vertical moves the number more than the title does.

Why am I getting so many irrelevant applicants for this role?

Because the title spans five different jobs in Hong Kong — bank branch operations, fund operations, IT and data-centre operations, retail operations, and logistics. On one agency's live board, finance ops ads outnumbered warehouse ops ads seven to one. Lead the ad with the vertical and the systems, and the flood filters itself.

Do I need an operations manager with Mandarin?

If the role faces mainland suppliers, factories or a Chinese parent company, yes — those ads specify Mandarin and English consistently. For purely local operations, Cantonese and English is the standard ask. Specify the language mix by counterparty rather than defaulting to trilingual, which shrinks the pool.

Can I offer hybrid work for an operations role?

It depends which operations. Port, warehouse and branch ops are inherently on-site and often shift-based. Business operations and finance operations can run hybrid — and against a market where 91% of Hong Kong employers were pushing more office time in a 2024 Morgan McKinley survey, even one flexible day is a genuine attraction lever.

How long does it take to hire an operations manager in Hong Kong?

The search is usually not the slow part; offers and notice periods are. Notice periods in Hong Kong are set by the employment contract rather than by one fixed rule, so ask about it in the first conversation instead of after the offer.
