How to hire in the United States

How to hire an in-house accountant in the US

Search for accountant hiring advice and most of it tells you how to engage a CPA firm for your taxes. This guide is about the other thing — employing an accountant on your own payroll to own the close, the reconciliations and the reporting. It covers what the role pays across the US, where the experienced people sit, and what to check before you sponsor a visa.

What it pays

What an in-house accountant costs in the US

The biggest pay levers in this market are the seniority band and the licence. A staff accountant doing the monthly close and a CPA-qualified senior who can own reporting are priced in different bands, and the spread between the coasts and the rest of the country is wide enough that a national average can mislead. Anchor on the band for the seat, not the headline number.

Figures checked August 2026. The BLS numbers cover every accountant and auditor in the country, so the median blends juniors with twenty-year controllers; the 90th percentile sits at $144,090. Robert Half's bands cover the roles agencies get paid to fill, and Indeed's average reflects advertised jobs, which skew junior. Read the spread as a seniority ladder, not a negotiation range — and expect the big coastal metros to price above all of these.

Where the talent sits

Where America's experienced accountants work

California, Texas and New York hold the deepest pools

BLS data for May 2025 puts accountant and auditor employment at 175,360 in California, 116,470 in Texas and 109,830 in New York — three states that together hold over a quarter of the national pool of 1.45 million. If your search is remote-friendly, these are the markets that widen it most.

Public accounting firms are the training ground

The accounting, tax preparation, bookkeeping and payroll services industry employs 330,500 accountants and auditors, per BLS May 2025 data. People trained in audit and tax at these firms — the Big Four and the mid-tiers — are the classic source for in-house senior accountant and controller hires, and Robert Half projects their salaries rising 3.7% year on year, ahead of the 2.1% average for finance and accounting.

It is a seller's market

Robert Half's 2026 research has 62% of finance and accounting leaders reporting difficulty filling accountant roles. The people you want are mostly employed, mostly not reading job boards, and increasingly used to being approached.

Specialist skills carry a visible premium

87% of finance and accounting leaders say they offer higher pay to candidates with specialised skills — data analytics, financial reporting depth, ERP systems experience — per Robert Half's 2026 guide. If the seat needs NetSuite or SAP fluency, budget for it and say so in the brief.

The spread rewards precision about the seat

The gap between the 25th percentile at $67,020 and the 90th at $144,090 in the BLS May 2025 data is the difference between a junior processing transactions and a senior owning reporting for a complex business. Ads that blur the two get applicants from the wrong end of the range.

Work authorization

Work authorisation when hiring an accountant in the US

Most in-house accounting hires in the US are people already authorised to work — US GAAP fluency usually means US experience. But if your best candidate needs sponsorship, these are the routes that matter for this role.

The candidate may already be free to work

US citizens, green card holders, and people holding a valid Employment Authorization Document — including many spouses of visa holders and recent graduates on OPT — can start without any sponsorship. Ask about work authorisation in the first call — it changes your timeline by months, not weeks.

H-1B — the capped lottery route

The standard sponsorship route for degree-level professional roles. It is capped at 65,000 visas a year plus a 20,000 exemption for holders of US advanced degrees, and cap-subject employers must first file an electronic registration when the window opens, typically in March. USCIS has already received enough petitions to reach both caps for fiscal year 2027 — so for a new hire this route is about next year, not this one. TN — the fast lane for Canadians and Mexicans

Accountant is on the USMCA professionals list, with a baccalaureate or Licenciatura degree — or a C.P.A., C.A., C.G.A. or C.M.A. credential — as the qualifying requirement, per the agreement's Chapter 16 appendix on the USTR site. There is no cap and no lottery; Canadian citizens can apply directly to a CBP officer at entry with an employer letter, and the initial period of stay is up to three years. O-1 — for the genuinely exceptional

The O-1 covers individuals with extraordinary ability in fields including business, shown through sustained national or international acclaim, with an initial stay of up to three years. It is rare for accounting hires and the bar is high, but it exists for a genuinely distinguished candidate who cannot wait for an H-1B. Source: USCIS O-1 visa page, last updated 3 March 2023.

These pages were read in August 2026 and the schemes do change — fees, caps and timelines have all moved in recent cycles. Check uscis.gov before relying on any of this, and take proper advice for a specific case — this is background, not legal advice.

How to run the search

How to actually run the search

Decide the seat before the salary

Staff accountant processing transactions, senior owning the close, or a first controller? Robert Half's 2026 national bands price staff at $61,000 to $87,750 and seniors at $80,000 to $109,000 — fix the seat first and the salary conversation becomes short.

Decide whether you actually need the CPA

The CPA is a state-issued licence, and it is a strong signal of rigour — but many in-house seats are about the monthly close, reconciliations and systems, not audit opinions. Requiring the licence where the work does not need it shrinks an already tight pool; 62% of finance leaders already report difficulty filling accountant roles, per Robert Half.

Screen for the close, not the CV

Month-end close ownership, reconciliation discipline, and fluency in your actual stack — NetSuite, SAP, QuickBooks — separate people who did the work from people who watched it. Specialised skills command higher pay in 87% of finance teams, so name the systems in the ad and test them in the interview.

Search the market, not the applicants

The accountants you want are closing someone else's books and not reading job boards. Talent Summoner searches public professional profiles across the open market and ranks them against your brief, so you start from people who fit rather than people who applied.

Move in days, not weeks

With 62% of finance and accounting leaders struggling to fill these roles, a good senior accountant on the market collects offers quickly. Tight process, fast feedback, and a number anchored to the published bands beat a long deliberation every time.

FAQ

Questions US employers ask

What salary should I offer an in-house accountant in the US?

The BLS puts the US median for accountants and auditors at $83,680 a year as of May 2025, with the middle half earning $67,020 to $109,810. Robert Half's 2026 national bands price a staff accountant at $61,000 to $87,750 and a senior accountant at $80,000 to $109,000, and Indeed's advertised-job average sits at about $68,198 as of August 2026. Anchor on the band for the seniority you need, and expect the big coastal metros to price above national.

What does an accountant cost beyond the salary?

The statutory floor is the employer's FICA share: 6.2% Social Security tax on wages up to $184,500 in 2026, plus 1.45% Medicare tax on all wages, per IRS Tax Topic 751. Benefits, state unemployment insurance and any bonus sit on top, and vary by state and employer.

Does my accountant need to be a CPA?

Only if the seat needs it. The CPA is a state-issued licence and a strong seniority signal, but plenty of in-house roles — the monthly close, reconciliations, management reporting — are done well by experienced non-licensed accountants. In a market where 62% of finance leaders report difficulty filling accountant roles, per Robert Half's 2026 research, requiring a licence the work does not need is an expensive filter.

Can I sponsor an accountant from abroad?

Yes, but the route matters. The H-1B is capped at 65,000 plus 20,000 for US advanced degrees, runs on an electronic registration that typically opens in March, and USCIS has already received enough petitions for fiscal year 2027 — so it is a next-year plan. For Canadian and Mexican citizens, TN status is faster: accountant is on the USMCA professionals list, there is no cap, and the initial stay is up to three years. Check uscis.gov for the current state of both.

Why is it so hard to hire accountants right now?

Demand is outrunning supply at the experienced end. Robert Half's 2026 research reports 62% of finance and accounting leaders struggling to fill accountant roles, public accounting salaries in tax and audit rising 3.7% year on year against a 2.1% sector average, and 87% of leaders paying premiums for specialised skills. The practical answer is to search the whole market rather than wait for applications.
