How to hire in the United States

How to hire a sales executive in the United States

In the United States, 'sales executive' can mean a quota-carrying closer or the manager who runs the team, and the market prices those seats very differently. This guide covers what the role pays, where the deepest pools of experienced salespeople sit, and how to run a search in a market where the best sellers are not reading job boards.

What it pays

What a sales executive costs in the United States

The biggest pay lever in this market is what the title actually means. An individual-contributor sales executive averages just under $97,000 base, while the sales managers who run teams sit at a median near $148,000 — and almost every seat adds commission on top. Decide which seat you are hiring for before you set the budget.

Figures checked August 2026. Indeed's numbers are base salary drawn from about 13,100 US job postings over 36 months, with commission reported separately — so the on-target earnings conversation is what matters, not the base alone. The BLS sales manager band is the one to watch if your 'sales executive' actually manages people: the median jumps by roughly $50,000 over the individual-contributor average.

Where the talent sits

Where America's experienced salespeople work

California, Texas and Florida hold the biggest pools

BLS May 2025 estimates put 112,440 sales managers in California, 76,010 in Texas and 46,480 in Florida — the three deepest state pools by a wide margin, ahead of New York's 38,510. If your search is remote-friendly, these three states are where the volume is.

Greater New York is the deepest single metro

The New York–Newark–Jersey City metro holds 44,870 sales managers on BLS May 2025 estimates, ahead of Los Angeles (37,790), Dallas–Fort Worth (26,780) and Chicago (25,390). Dallas–Fort Worth is the one to note: a top-three pool with a lower cost of living than either coast.

The industries that train them

By BLS May 2025 industry estimates, the largest employers of sales managers are automobile dealers (38,800), computer systems design and related services (37,790), corporate head offices (37,750) and durable-goods wholesalers. A closer trained in tech services and one trained on a dealership floor sell very differently — match the background to your sales motion.

Where the pay skews high

Indeed's city data, updated 3 August 2026, puts New York at $110,683 a year for sales executives, Chicago at $105,177 and Austin at $101,370 — all comfortably above the $96,753 national average. Budget for the metro you are actually hiring in, not the national number.

The title means different things in different industries

US postings use 'sales executive' for field and account sellers in hospitality, logistics, wholesale and auto — while tech tends to call the same seat 'account executive'. BLS has no sales executive occupation at all; the closest codes are sales managers and sales representatives. Search both titles or you will miss half the market.

Work authorization

Work authorisation for hiring a sales executive in the United States

Most US sales hires are domestic — the role rarely clears the specialty-occupation bar that employment visas demand, and it depends on native-level market fluency anyway. But if your best candidate is not a US citizen, these are the routes.

The candidate may already be free to work

US citizens, green card holders, and people holding a valid Employment Authorization Document (EAD) — including many spouses of visa holders — can start without any petition. Ask this in the first call — it is the difference between a two-week start and no start at all.

H-1B — only if the role is genuinely a specialty occupation

H-1B covers roles requiring a bachelor's degree or higher in a directly related specialty, runs on an annual lottery against a cap of 65,000 places plus 20,000 for US advanced degrees, and USCIS announced the fiscal year 2027 cap was already reached. Most sales executive roles do not qualify, because the job rarely requires a specific degree. Source: USCIS H-1B Specialty Occupations page, last updated 28 July 2026.

TN — Canadians and Mexicans, but check the list first

TN status lets Canadian and Mexican citizens work in the US in professions included in the USMCA, with an initial stay of up to three years; Canadians can present their documents directly at the border with a job offer letter. The catch: the USMCA profession list is fixed and skews technical and scientific — typical sales titles are not on it, so this route rarely fits a pure sales hire. O-1A — for the genuinely exceptional

The O-1A covers individuals with extraordinary ability in business, among other fields, demonstrated by sustained national or international acclaim. The bar is high and the evidence burden real, but it has no lottery — occasionally viable for a star revenue leader with a public track record. Source: USCIS O-1 visa page, last updated 3 March 2023.

These pages were read in August 2026 and the rules were moving — the H-1B $100,000 payment requirement was vacated by a federal court in June 2026 and DHS was still contesting it. Check uscis.gov before relying on any of this, and take proper advice for a specific case — this is background, not legal advice.

How to run the search

How to actually run the search

Decide which seat you are actually hiring

An individual-contributor closer and a manager who runs a team both answer to 'sales executive' in the US, and the market prices them about $50,000 apart at the median. Fix the scope first — the salary conversation gets short once you do.

Set the package the way the market reads it

US sales pay is quoted as base plus commission — Indeed's data shows about $24,000 a year in commission on top of a $96,753 average base. Publish the on-target earnings and the split. Ads that hide the commission structure get fewer strong applicants, because strong closers negotiate on OTE.

Screen on numbers, not adjectives

Ask every candidate for quota, attainment, average deal size and sales-cycle length for their last two roles. Then check the match to your motion: a dealership or wholesale background and a tech-services background produce very different sellers, and the CV keyword is the same either way.

Search the market, not the applicants

The sales executives you want are carrying someone else's quota and not reading job boards. Talent Summoner searches public professional profiles across the open market and ranks them against your brief, so you start from people who fit rather than people who applied.

Move in days, not weeks

US employment is largely at-will, so notice periods are short and good sellers move fast — often inside the two weeks of customary notice. When a proven closer comes on the market, a slow interview loop is the same thing as a rejection.

FAQ

Questions US employers ask

What salary should I offer a sales executive in the United States?

Indeed's US data, updated 3 August 2026, puts the average base at $96,753 a year plus about $24,000 in commission, with postings spread from $48,888 to $191,480. Entry-level averages about $54,672 and senior sales executives about $125,280. If the seat manages a team, budget against the BLS May 2025 sales manager median of $148,270 instead.

What does 'sales executive' actually mean in the US market?

It depends on the industry. Hospitality, logistics, wholesale and auto use it for quota-carrying field and account sellers, while tech usually calls the same seat 'account executive'. BLS does not track a sales executive occupation at all — the closest official categories are sales managers and sales representatives — so search on both titles when you source.

What does a sales executive cost beyond the salary?

Commission first — Indeed reports about $24,000 a year on average, and strong closers earn well past that. Then the statutory on-cost: employers pay 6.2% Social Security tax on the first $184,500 of wages in 2026 plus 1.45% Medicare tax on all wages, per the Social Security Administration, before benefits, state unemployment insurance and any tooling.

Can I hire a sales executive from outside the United States?

Rarely on a work visa. H-1B requires a role that genuinely demands a specific degree — most sales jobs do not — and USCIS announced the fiscal year 2027 cap was already reached. The TN route for Canadians and Mexicans only covers professions on the USMCA list, which typical sales titles are not. In practice, look for candidates already authorised: citizens, green card holders and EAD holders.

Where are the deepest pools of experienced salespeople in the US?

By BLS May 2025 estimates, California (112,440 sales managers), Texas (76,010) and Florida (46,480) lead the states, and greater New York is the deepest metro at 44,870, ahead of Los Angeles, Dallas–Fort Worth and Chicago. By industry, the biggest concentrations sit in auto dealers, computer systems design, corporate head offices and durable-goods wholesale.
