Finance Manager Interview Questions: 15 to Ask and Score
15 finance manager interview questions on close, forecasting, controls and cash, grouped by interview stage, with what a strong answer shows and a 1–4 scale.

The best finance manager interview questions test the work itself: closing the books on time, explaining a forecast miss, fixing a weak control and helping leaders decide with the numbers. The 15 questions below are grouped by interview stage, each with what a strong answer shows and the warning sign to listen for.
We build Talent Summoner, which finds and ranks candidates for a role before the interviews start. As of 3 October 2026 your first Role is free with no card, then US$29 per Role or US$59 a month for 10 Roles (pricing); the questions below work whether or not you use it.
If a CFO or controller is running your loop with their own technical test, use theirs and borrow the scoring scale. If this is your first finance manager hire and nobody on the panel is a finance expert, start with the tables.
15 finance manager interview questions by stage
Ask every candidate the same core questions at the same stage. That is what makes the answers comparable.
Screening call questions
| # | Question | A strong answer shows | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Which parts of finance have you owned yourself: close, planning, cash, payroll, tax? | A clear line between what they ran and what they reviewed or supported | Everything is "we", or every area is claimed |
| 2 | What size of company and team have you worked in? | They know a small finance team means doing the work, not only managing it | Only large-company experience, with set processes and a big team |
| 3 | Which systems have you run the books in, and how quickly did you learn a new one? | Real system use and a learning story | They can only work in one tool |
Skills interview questions
| # | Question | A strong answer shows | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | Walk me through a month-end close you ran. Where did it slow down, and what did you change? | Clear steps, a known bottleneck and a fix that stuck | They describe the close only in general terms |
| 5 | Tell me about a forecast that turned out wrong. How did you find out why? | They traced the gap to a cause and changed the next forecast | They blame "the business" and change nothing |
| 6 | Tell me about a control or reconciliation you added or fixed. What risk did it address? | A named risk, a simple check and who owns it | Controls are "audit's job" |
| 7 | Tell me about a time cash was tight. What did you do? | A short-term plan, clear options for leaders and early warning | They noticed too late, or only cut costs |
| 8 | Tell me about a time you explained the numbers to someone outside finance. | Plain words, focus on the decision, honest about uncertainty | Jargon, or they only send spreadsheets |
Work sample questions
Give a short, made-up case before or during the interview, never your real confidential data.
| # | Question | A strong answer shows | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9 | Here is a simple budget-versus-actual report with one big gap. What do you check first? | Data errors first, then timing, then real change, with questions for the owner | They jump to a conclusion from one number |
| 10 | Here is a list of month-end tasks. Put them in order and say what you would delegate. | A sensible order, clear owners and a check at the end | They keep every task for themselves |
| 11 | A founder wants a big spend approved this week. What do you need to know? | Cash impact, return, risk, and who else must approve | They approve or block without asking anything |
Final interview questions
| # | Question | A strong answer shows | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12 | Tell me about a mistake in your numbers. What happened next? | They found it or owned it, fixed it, told people and changed a step | No mistakes, or it was hidden |
| 13 | Tell me about a time you pushed back on a leader about money. | Facts, a clear recommendation, then commitment to the decision | They never push back, or always win |
| 14 | How do you develop the people on your finance team? | Training, clear reviews and work that stretches them | The team only does tasks |
| 15 | What would you look at in your first 30 days here? | The close, cash, controls and the people, before changing anything | Big changes planned before they see the books |
What a finance manager has to prove
Pick 4 to 6 questions for each one-hour interview, starting from what your company needs most:
- An accurate, on-time close: the books are right and ready when leaders need them.
- Useful forecasts: they explain misses and improve the next one.
- Sound controls: simple checks that stop errors and fraud, owned by named people.
- Cash awareness: they see a tight month coming and give leaders options.
- Clear communication: non-finance people understand the numbers and the decision.

How to score finance manager interview answers
Score each answer alone, right after the interview, before you talk to the other interviewers:
| Score | What it means |
|---|---|
| 1 | No real evidence: vague, off-topic, or a warning sign |
| 2 | Thin evidence: one example with gaps, or ideas without action |
| 3 | Good evidence: a clear example that matches what you need |
| 4 | Strong evidence: clear examples, sound reasons and a result they can explain |
Score what the candidate did, not their vocabulary. A qualification or a well-known employer is context, not proof of the work.
The candidate interview scorecard template gives you a layout for this scale. The interview notes template helps each interviewer capture evidence during the call.
Finance manager interview mistakes to avoid
- Testing only technical terms. Knowing the words is not the same as running a close.
- Asking for real confidential data. Use a made-up case, and don't reward candidates who share a past employer's numbers.
- Requiring a qualification the role doesn't need. Ask for it only if the job truly requires it.
- Personal questions. Skip age, family plans, health and religion; many places restrict them.
- Deciding in the room. Score alone first, then discuss, or the loudest view wins.
When these finance manager interview questions are wrong for you
This set of 15 questions is built for a hands-on finance manager in a small or growing company. Swap them out in three cases:
- Controller or CFO: add questions on audit, fundraising, board reporting and building a finance team.
- Planning-only role (FP&A, short for financial planning and analysis): weight forecasting and modelling over the close.
- Regulated industry: have your auditor or adviser review the question set first.

What are the main roles of a finance manager?
We group a small-company finance manager's work into four areas: closing the books accurately, planning and forecasting, protecting cash and controls, and helping leaders decide with the numbers. Your interview should test each one the role includes.
What are technical interview questions for a finance manager?
Ask them to walk through a month-end close, explain a forecast miss, describe a reconciliation they fixed, and review a short made-up budget-versus-actual report. A strong candidate explains each step in plain words and names what they changed.
What should I ask a senior finance manager?
Add questions on leading a finance team, pushing back on leaders about money, and building controls from scratch. Ask for a real example of each, not a general description of their approach.
How many finance manager interview questions should I ask?
Ask 4 to 6 in a one-hour interview. That leaves time for follow-ups, which is where most of the evidence comes out.
Pick 4 to 6 questions for each one-hour interview, share the scoring scale with every interviewer, and agree who makes the final call before the first interview.
