Fractional Recruiter: What It Costs and When to Hire One

A fractional recruiter is a part-time recruiter you pay by the hour, month or hire. See published prices, per-hire math and when it beats an agency.

Fractional Recruiter: What It Costs and When to Hire One

A fractional recruiter is an experienced recruiter who works part of their week on your hiring, paid by the hour, by the month or per hire instead of as a full-time employee. They usually run sourcing, screening and scheduling inside your own process, then step away when the hiring push ends.

We build Talent Summoner, which searches public profiles and gives you a ranked shortlist so you can run the search yourself. As of 4 October 2026 your first Role is free with no card and your second is US$4, then US$29 per Role or US$59 a month for 10 Roles (pricing).

If you need someone to contact, screen and close candidates for several roles at once, a fractional recruiter may fit. If you hire once or twice a year and can run interviews yourself, compare the last row of the table first.

How much does a fractional recruiter cost?

Prices below are published or reported by the firms named, checked on 4 October 2026. The last column is our arithmetic on a made-up plan: three hires for three different roles, each at a US$120,000 base salary, over four months.

The rows do not buy the same work. A fractional recruiter or an agency contacts, screens and sells the role to candidates; with a sourcing tool, you do those steps yourself.

What does a fractional recruiter do?

A fractional recruiter does an in-house recruiter's work for part of the week. Crucial Recruiting's pricing page, for example, says its embedded recruiting fee covers:

  • Role scoping and written scorecards.
  • A map of the realistic candidate pool.
  • Direct outreach sent from your company's domain.
  • Screening calls with written summaries.
  • Interview design, coordination and offer support.

Before you start, ask in writing that the candidate list and notes stay in your own systems.

How is fractional recruiting priced?

Fractional recruiting is priced in a few ways:

  • Monthly retainer: best when several roles are open for a quarter or more.
  • Hourly: best for a short burst of help. Ask for a weekly hours cap.
  • Per search: best for a single seat, at a set amount instead of a share of salary.

Some fractional firms also sell contingency searches, so check which model your contract uses.

When a fractional recruiter is worth it

A fractional recruiter earns its fee in a few clear cases:

  • You have two or more roles open in the same quarter.
  • Nobody on your team has the hours to contact, screen and schedule candidates.
  • Agency fees on several hires would cost more. On the made-up plan above, four months of retainer costs about as much as one or two agency fees.

Our agency fee break-even calculator runs this comparison with your own numbers.

When a fractional recruiter is wrong for you

It is a poor fit when:

  • You hire one person a year. The Kas Group's own guide says a monthly retainer sits idle in that case.
  • The role is not defined yet.
  • Nobody can interview and decide within a week.
  • Your real problem is finding names, not talking to people. If you can run the calls yourself, a sourcing tool costs far less on the made-up plan above.

For one hard seat, read how contingency recruiting works and when a recruitment agency is worth the fee. With no recruiter at all, see startup hiring without an internal recruiter and recruitment agency vs direct sourcing.

Where Talent Summoner fits

Talent Summoner searches LinkedIn, GitHub and other public sources, over 200 million profiles. It ranks each person with must-haves, nice-to-haves and plain-English reasoning.

You can then send outreach from your own Gmail, Outlook or LinkedIn, and nothing sends until you review it. Your first Role is free and your second is US$4, then US$29 per Role, or US$59 a month for 10 Roles if you hire often.

Trade-offs, stated plainly: no paid InMail, no always-on pipeline and no ATS integration today. It does not screen, interview or schedule candidates for you, which is most of what a fractional recruiter's time pays for.

We checked these facts on 4 October 2026 and re-check them every quarter.

What is a fractional recruiter?

A fractional recruiter is an experienced recruiter who works part-time on a company's hiring, paid by the hour, by the month or per hire rather than as a full-time employee. They usually run sourcing, screening and interview scheduling inside the company's own process.

How much does a recruiter cost?

A fractional recruiter costs US$5,000 to US$10,000 a month on the retainers Crucial Recruiting and The Kas Group publish, or US$75 to US$250 an hour as reported by Dover and Pin (checked 4 October 2026). A contingency agency recruiter charges 15% to 25% of first-year base salary per hire according to AllVoices, or 20% to 25% of first-year cash pay according to SHRM.

Is a fractional recruiter the same as a recruitment agency?

A fractional recruiter is usually paid for time and works inside your hiring process, while a contingency recruitment agency is paid a share of the hire's salary only when you hire its candidate. Some fractional firms also sell contingency searches, so check which model a fractional recruiter's contract uses.

When should a startup hire a fractional recruiter?

A startup should consider a fractional recruiter when it has two or more roles open at once and nobody with time to contact, screen and schedule candidates. For one hire a year, compare a per-hire fee or running the search yourself, because a monthly retainer would sit idle between hires.

Count your open roles for the next two quarters, then price each option against that number before you sign.
