How to hire in Singapore

How to hire an accountant in Singapore

Search for how to hire an accountant in Singapore and most of what comes back is about engaging an accounting firm. This guide is about the other thing: hiring an in-house accountant as an employee — someone on your payroll who owns the ACRA annual return, the IRAS filings and the month-end close. It covers what the role pays here, where the qualified people sit, and the work-pass maths if your best candidate is not local.

What it pays

What an in-house accountant costs in Singapore

The biggest pricing mistake in this market is title inflation. An assistant accountant, an accountant and a financial accounting manager are three different jobs with three different medians, and the official data prices them sharply apart. Decide which one you are actually hiring before you set the budget.

Figures checked August 2026. The MOM bands are the 25th to 75th percentile of resident gross monthly wages from the Occupational Wage Survey of June 2024 — the latest published round — covering private-sector firms with at least 25 employees. Morgan McKinley quotes annual packages and skews towards the roles agencies get paid to fill. The number to notice is the jump from the accountant median of S$5,498 to the manager median of S$9,203: that is the line between doing the close and owning it, and blurring the two in one job ad gets you the wrong applicants at the wrong number.

Where the talent sits

Where Singapore's accountants work

A chartered profession with a national register

The Institute of Singapore Chartered Accountants counts over 43,000 members and is the body designated by the Ministry of Finance to confer the CA (Singapore) designation. It is a large, organised pool — which also means the credential alone does not narrow a search much. Source: isca.org.sg, read August 2026.

Live demand is steady, not frantic

MyCareersFuture, the government job portal, listed around 416 job ads matching 'accountant' in August 2026. The role clearly exists at volume here — but so does the competition for the same CVs, which is why the best candidates rarely need to apply anywhere.

The manager band is where the experience sits

MOM's June 2024 data puts the financial accounting manager and financial controller median at S$9,203 a month — nearly double the accountant median. The people who have run a full close cycle for years are in these seats, employed, and not reading job boards.

Audit firms are the training ground — but not a discount rack

The MOM median for an auditor in accounting is S$5,575 a month, within S$80 of the in-house accountant median of S$5,498. Audit-trained candidates moving into industry are moving for hours and scope, not for a pay rise, so a below-median offer will not land them.

Tax and financial services carry a visible premium

The MOM median for a tax accountant is S$9,726 a month against S$5,498 for a general accountant, and MOM's own Employment Pass rules set a higher salary floor for financial services than for every other sector. If your vacancy touches either specialism, budget for it explicitly.

Work passes

Work passes for hiring an accountant in Singapore

Most in-house accounting hires in Singapore are local — day-to-day fluency with ACRA, IRAS and CPF submissions usually means local experience. But if the best candidate is not a citizen or permanent resident, these are the routes.

The candidate may already be free to work

Singapore citizens and permanent residents need no pass at all, and CPF applies to them from day one. Ask about status in the first call — it changes both the timeline and the cost base.

Employment Pass (EP) and COMPASS

The standard route for degree-level professionals. The candidate must clear a minimum qualifying salary — S$5,600 a month, or S$6,200 in financial services, rising progressively with age to S$10,700 and S$11,800 at 45 and above — and then score at least 40 points on COMPASS, the points framework covering salary, qualifications, diversity and local employment. From 1 January 2027 the floors rise to S$6,000 and S$6,600. Source: MOM Employment Pass eligibility page, last updated 28 April 2026.

S Pass — the mid-skilled route

For associate-level roles such as accounts support. New applications need a fixed monthly salary of at least S$3,300 — S$3,800 in financial services — rising with age, and the floors move to S$3,600 and S$4,000 from 1 January 2027. S Pass hires also sit under quota and levy rules, so check both before offering. Source: MOM S Pass eligibility page, last updated 19 May 2026.

Overseas Networks & Expertise Pass (ONE Pass)

A personal pass for top earners: the applicant needs a fixed monthly salary of at least S$30,000 over the previous 12 months, or a comparable offer from an established Singapore employer. Rare in accounting hires, but a candidate who already holds one can be employed much like a local. Source: MOM ONE Pass eligibility page, last updated 13 May 2026.

These pages were read in August 2026 and the schemes do change — qualifying salaries are already scheduled to rise in January 2027. Check mom.gov.sg before relying on any of this, and take proper advice for a specific case — this is background, not legal advice.

How to run the search

How to actually run the search

Decide employee or firm before you write anything

Most content about hiring an accountant in Singapore is really about outsourcing to an accounting firm. If the work is a monthly compliance cycle, a firm may be the answer. If you need someone inside the business — closing the books, managing cash, answering the auditors — you are hiring an employee, and the rest of this page applies.

Use the title the data uses

MOM prices assistant accountant at a S$3,885 median, accountant at S$5,498 and financial accounting manager at S$9,203 a month. Advertise the title that matches the work: calling a S$4,000 bookkeeping seat 'Finance Manager' attracts people you cannot afford and repels the ones you can.

Screen for the statutory calendar

ACRA annual returns, corporate tax and GST filings with IRAS, monthly CPF submissions — this is the recurring core of an in-house accounting seat, not trivia. The CA (Singapore) designation, conferred by ISCA, is the strongest local qualification signal for the senior end.

Search the market, not the applicants

The accountants you want are running someone else's close and not reading job boards. Talent Summoner searches public professional profiles across the open market and ranks them against your brief, so you start from people who fit rather than people who applied.

Do the pass maths early for foreign candidates

An EP candidate must clear S$5,600 a month — more with age and in financial services — plus 40 COMPASS points, and the floors rise again in January 2027. If a shortlisted candidate needs a pass, check the numbers before the offer stage, not after.

FAQ

Questions Singapore employers ask

What salary should I offer an accountant in Singapore?

MOM's Occupational Wage Survey of June 2024 puts the median gross wage for an accountant (excluding tax accountants) at S$5,498 a month, with the middle half of the market between S$4,600 and S$6,695. An assistant accountant sits at a S$3,885 median, and a financial accounting manager or controller at S$9,203. Morgan McKinley's 2026 guide benchmarks a financial accountant at about S$60,000 a year with 5–10 years' experience, rising to about S$100,000 at 15-plus years.

Should I hire an in-house accountant or engage an accounting firm?

They solve different problems. A firm handles a periodic compliance cycle at arm's length; an in-house accountant is an employee who owns your books, cash position and audit relationship day to day. If you hire in-house, remember the on-cost: employer CPF of 17% for staff aged 55 and below, calculated on the first S$8,000 of monthly wages from 1 January 2026.

What does an accountant actually cost me beyond salary?

For a citizen or permanent resident aged 55 and below, employer CPF adds 17% on the first S$8,000 of monthly wages — up to S$1,360 a month on top of salary at the ceiling, per CPF Board rates effective 1 January 2026. Rates step down for older age bands, and a further rate rise for the 55-to-65 bands is already announced for January 2027.

Can I hire a foreign accountant in Singapore?

Yes, if the numbers work. A degree-level hire needs an Employment Pass: at least S$5,600 a month (S$6,200 in financial services), rising with age, plus a pass mark of 40 points on COMPASS. Associate-level roles can use the S Pass from S$3,300 a month. Both floors rise in January 2027, per MOM's eligibility pages read in August 2026.

What qualifications should I look for?

The CA (Singapore) designation is the national benchmark — ISCA, the body designated by the Ministry of Finance to confer it, counts over 43,000 members. For the work itself, screen for the statutory calendar the candidate has actually run: ACRA annual returns, IRAS corporate tax and GST filings, and CPF submissions.
