How to hire in Taiwan

How to hire a product designer in Taiwan

In Taiwan, 產品設計師 — product designer — usually means someone who designs physical products for mass production, while the people who design apps and software ship under UI/UX titles. Post the wrong title and you interview the wrong market. This guide covers what both pools pay, where the experienced people sit, and the work-permit routes if your best candidate is not local.

What it pays

What a product designer costs in Taiwan

The biggest pay lever in this market is which of Taiwan's two design markets you are actually hiring from. Industrial product designers and UX designers are priced on different curves, and the gap widens with seniority — so settle the title before you settle the budget.

Figures checked August 2026. The 104 bands are P25–P75 ranges from employee-reported data — 245 samples for product designers, 110 for UX designers, both updated 10 August 2026. Note the crossover: a mid-career UX designer out-earns a mid-career product designer, and 104's product-designer data thins out past five years — the senior industrial designers are there, they just are not filling in salary surveys.

Where the talent sits

Where Taiwan's product designers work

Two markets under one title

On 104, a search for 產品設計師 returns over 1,000 live ads (checked August 2026), and the employers behind them are overwhelmingly hardware makers and design consultancies. Digital product roles are advertised as UI or UX designer instead. Decide which market you are in before you write the ad — the CVs do not cross over as much as the English titles suggest.

Taipei first, then the manufacturing corridor

Product designer openings on 104 cluster in Taipei, with Taichung and Taoyuan the next largest concentrations (August 2026). The pattern follows the industry: consumer-electronics and brand headquarters in the north, manufacturing and tooling further out — and designers who sit near the factory tend to have the deepest design-for-manufacture experience.

The design consultancies

Taiwan has a genuine product-design consultancy tier — firms like Nova Design (浩漢產品設計), which was recruiting product designers on 104 in August 2026. Consultancy-trained designers have shipped across categories and clients, which is breadth an in-house team rarely builds, and they are a reliable source of senior hires for brand-side roles.

The awards circuit — Golden Pin and TDRI

The Golden Pin Design Award, executed by the Taiwan Design Research Institute, is the island's flagship design prize, with concept and young-designer tracks alongside the main award. Winner and shortlist announcements are public — which makes them a ready-made map of the designers and studios doing credible work right now.

The senior UX pool is thin

104's salary dataset holds 245 product-designer samples against 110 for UX designers (August 2026), and the senior UX bracket — five to ten years, median NT$70,000 a month — is the smallest slice of that. Taiwan's software design market is younger than its hardware one, so senior digital designers are the segment you are least likely to find applying.

Work permits

Work-permit routes for hiring a product designer in Taiwan

Most design hires in Taiwan are local — the working language of hardware development here is Mandarin, and the pay bands rarely justify relocation cases. But if your best candidate is foreign, these are the routes.

The candidate may already be free to work

Foreign nationals with permanent residency (an APRC) and certain family-based residents are exempt from the standard employer-applied permit under the Employment Service Act, and can hold work rights that are not tied to your company. Ask in the first call — it changes the timeline by weeks. Source: Employment Service Act, law.moj.gov.tw, amended 20 January 2025.

Employer-applied work permit — specialised or technical work

The standard route for a professional design hire: your company applies to the Ministry of Labor's Workforce Development Agency through the EZ Work Taiwan portal, under the specialised or technical work category. Qualification and salary criteria are set in the ministry's review standards, so check the current thresholds before you make the offer. Employment Gold Card

A combined open work permit, resident visa and re-entry permit, valid for up to three years — the candidate applies themselves and no employer sponsorship is needed. The digital field qualifies people with a monthly salary of at least NT$160,000 or at least eight years of relevant professional experience, among other routes, and there is a separate culture and arts field. If your candidate already holds one, you can hire them much like a local. Source: goldcard.nat.gov.tw field-of-digital page, read August 2026.

Top-200 university graduates

Foreign nationals who earned a bachelor's degree or higher from one of the world's top 200 universities within the past five years can apply directly for professional work permission — a useful route for junior design hires without a long work history. These pages were read in August 2026 and the schemes do change — thresholds and field criteria are revised regularly. Check ezworktaiwan.wda.gov.tw and goldcard.nat.gov.tw before relying on any of this, and take proper advice for a specific case — this is background, not legal advice.

How to run the search

How to actually run the search

Decide which product designer you mean

In Taiwan the title 產品設計師 buys you the industrial-design market — physical products, tooling, mass production. If you are building software, the people you want are advertised and priced as UI/UX designers. Fix this before writing the ad, because the two pools barely overlap and the pay curves differ.

Set pay against the right benchmark

Use the 104 bands for the pool you chose: a mid-career product designer sits around a NT$54,000 monthly median, a mid-career UX designer around NT$63,000, rising to NT$70,000 at five-plus years. Budgeting an industrial-design salary for a senior digital role is the commonest way these searches stall.

Screen for shipped work, not renders

For hardware roles, the signal is products that reached mass production — ask which parts of the portfolio were tooled and sold, and which stayed concepts. Golden Pin, iF and Red Dot mentions are meaningful here because Taiwan's employers compete on them. For UX roles, ask for the shipped product and the metric it moved.

Search the market, not the applicants

The designers you want are shipping someone else's products and not reading job boards — and Taiwan's senior digital pool is especially thin. Talent Summoner searches public professional profiles across the open market and ranks them against your brief, so you start from people who fit rather than people who applied.

Time the offer around bonus season

Taiwanese employers typically pay year-end bonuses before Lunar New Year, and candidates rarely resign ahead of a bonus they have already earned. Expect start dates to slip towards the new year if you offer in the final quarter, and expect the liveliest switching market just after the holiday.

FAQ

Questions Taiwan employers ask

What salary should I offer a product designer in Taiwan?

Per the 104 Salary Guide (checked August 2026), product designers earn a median of NT$42,000 a month with under a year's experience, rising to NT$54,000 at three to five years, on a P25–P75 range of NT$42,000 to NT$65,000. If the role is digital, benchmark against UX designers instead: NT$63,000 median at three to five years and NT$70,000 at five to ten, per the same source.

Does "product designer" mean UX designer in Taiwan?

Usually not. In Taiwanese job ads, 產品設計師 refers to physical product and industrial design — the 1111 salary database defines the role as designing mass-produced products across form, colour, function and safety. Digital product roles are advertised as UI or UX designer, and 104 prices the two pools separately. Use the local title for the market you actually want.

What do statutory employer costs add on top of salary?

Three items, per the Bureau of Labor Insurance and the National Health Insurance Administration (checked August 2026): labour insurance at 12.5% of insured salary with the employer bearing 70%; health insurance at 5.17% with the employer bearing 60%, scaled by an average-dependants factor; and a labour pension contribution of at least 6% of monthly wages, paid entirely by the employer.

Can I hire a foreign product designer in Taiwan?

Yes, through a few routes. Your company can apply for a work permit under the specialised or technical work category via the Ministry of Labor's EZ Work Taiwan portal. Candidates can also hold an Employment Gold Card — an open work permit valid up to three years that needs no employer sponsorship, with a digital-field route at NT$160,000 a month or eight years' experience. APRC holders already have work rights independent of your company.

Where do product designers cluster in Taiwan?

Taipei has the largest share of openings, with Taichung and Taoyuan next, per 104 job-ad data checked August 2026 — over 1,000 product designer ads were live across the island. Beyond in-house teams at hardware brands, the consultancy tier (firms like Nova Design) and the Golden Pin Design Award winner lists are the fastest maps of who is doing credible work.
