Technical Sourcing Channels and Their Trade-offs

Seven Hong Kong technical sourcing channels, compared by the evidence each produces, the consent it implies and what it cannot tell you.

Technical Sourcing Channels and Their Trade-offs

Technical sourcing in Hong Kong works better when every channel has a job. A public profile helps discover experience; an application shows someone chose to respond; a referral adds context; and a university route surfaces early-career evidence. None is proof of ability. Choose the route for the question you need to answer, then verify it with the person.

Start with the question, not the channel

Write the brief before searching. Separate must-haves from nice-to-haves, state the Hong Kong or APAC working pattern and define supporting evidence. A backend engineer's repository may justify a question, but does not prove production ownership.

Seven channels and their trade-offs

Public professional profiles

LinkedIn and personal sites provide career context, titles, organisations, stated skills and a possible contact route. LinkedIn explains that its public profile is simplified; see its public-profile guidance, checked 19 August 2026. Treat it as partial, candidate-stated evidence: it cannot establish availability, interest, scope or accuracy. A public page justifies an invitation, not contact consent. Your team owns the message and role note.

GitHub and other public technical work

GitHub can show repositories, pull requests, issues and qualifying activity. GitHub says a profile presents work the person chooses to share; its contribution reference, checked 19 August 2026, explains that only activity meeting criteria is counted. Use it to ask about ownership or design. It cannot prove authorship, production impact, quality, seniority or interest. A quiet profile is ambiguous.

Referrals and technical communities

An employee referral, alumni introduction, meetup, open-source community or professional group can add context. A referrer's confidence is not evidence of fit, and membership is not permission to recruit. Ask for an opt-in introduction; follow community rules. Record the path, date and response. The hiring team owns consent and verification.

Job boards and inbound applications

Inbound is the clearest route for someone who chooses to apply. The Hong Kong Labour Department's Interactive Employment Service material, checked 19 August 2026, describes vacancy posts, direct applications and job referral. An application shows interest in this role, not technical ability, availability or accurate CV claims. Make the description precise and keep the application record with the recruiting team.

Recruitment agencies

An agency can help when a team needs specialist knowledge, managed search or contact coordination. Its advantage is capacity; its trade-off is another hand-off before your decision. Ask for the source, permission to be represented, supporting evidence and prior approaches. Keep one record and let your team own verification and contact decisions.

Universities and early-career routes

University career services, placements, capstone showcases, hackathons and technical societies can surface graduates and interns. They may show coursework, projects and teamwork, but not experienced production depth. State whether the role is internship, graduate or experienced. Let students choose what to share and use a work sample or conversation to test it.

Internal records, only with a reason

An earlier applicant, contractor or referral can be relevant only when its original purpose, notice, access controls and retention decision support this use. Do not treat an old spreadsheet as a permanent pool. The Hong Kong PCPD's Code of Practice on Human Resource Management, checked 19 August 2026, says selection information should be relevant, not excessive and collected fairly, with secure need-to-know access. It advises consent before references. Apply local privacy review; public availability does not remove it.

Mix channels and control duplicates

Use a source log with brief version, channel, URL or referral path, review date, evidence, unknowns, contact basis, owner and next action. Test a mix against the same must-haves. Compare evidence and unanswered questions, not an invented benchmark. Stop when approved routes cover the brief and the team can complete verification.

Deduplicate at person level, not by name alone. Prefer a stable profile URL or candidate-provided identifier, then keep one record with all sources and dates. Preserve the consent route. If two agencies present the same person, clarify representation before contact. The hiring team owns review or deletion.

Where Talent Summoner fits

Talent Summoner is our product for public-source discovery. Its candidate-sourcing tool, checked 19 August 2026, starts with a role brief and searches LinkedIn, GitHub and other public sources across 200M+ profiles. It returns ranked must-have and nice-to-have matches with plain-English reasoning; feedback can adjust later search and weighting. Use it as one input and inspect evidence yourself. Your team owns outreach, consent, duplicates and records; the product sends messages only after you review and confirm them. Sourcing is free to start. See current pricing for options.

FAQ

Which channel is best for Hong Kong technical hiring?

There is no universal best channel. Use inbound for applications, public profiles or GitHub for discovery, referrals for introductions, agencies for managed search and universities for early-career roles. Combine routes only when your team can verify them.

Does a public profile mean I can contact the person?

No. Public visibility does not show consent, interest or availability. Explain the role, offer a way to decline and follow applicable privacy and contact rules.

How should I handle the same candidate from two channels?

Match using a stable profile URL or candidate-provided identifier, not name alone. Keep one record with both source paths and dates, preserve consent and resolve agency representation before contact.

What does Talent Summoner contribute?

Talent Summoner is our sourcing product. It searches public professional sources from a role brief and returns ranked matches with plain-English reasoning. Your team verifies evidence, chooses contact and owns the source log and decision.

Choose one Hong Kong role, define three evidence-based must-haves and assign an owner for each channel. Then run a focused sourcing search, log the sources and review the resulting evidence before making contact.
