Free Resume Search for Employers: What's Really Free (2026)
Free resume search for employers: Google x-ray, GitHub and Pin's free plan, plus what Indeed and Monster charge. Prices from vendor pages, November 2026.

Indeed's US guide says employers can search its resume database and preview profiles, but contacting people and advanced search typically need a subscription. Indeed and Monster, the two resume databases whose prices we could read, charge for full access. Below is what each option gives you at no cost, with prices read from each vendor's own page on 4 November 2026.
We build Talent Summoner, which is not a resume database: you describe the role in plain English, and it searches public profiles and returns a ranked shortlist with the reasoning for each person. Your first Role is free, with no card.
Hire every week and need people who are actively job hunting? Jump to the paid-database section; if you hire a few times a year, start with the table.

Monster's search description says "try a free resume search", but its resume-search and plan pages show no free tier or trial.
Two free search strings to copy
Google can search public LinkedIn profiles by title and place. Our x-ray search guide tests nine strings and shows where they break.
site:linkedin.com/in "registered nurse" "icu" "denver"GitHub's own search finds engineers by place and language.
type:user location:berlin language:pythonWhere free search stops
- No contact details: an x-ray result is a name, a headline and a link. GitHub's user search covers public emails, so you only find an address a user has made public.
- Drift after page one: in our 3 October x-ray test, page two of two strings held 10 LinkedIn profiles each, and none matched both the role and the place.
- Sign-in wall: LinkedIn may ask you to sign in after you open a few profiles.
A free search for one role
- Write the brief in one line: the job title, the place in full, and one must-have skill.
- Run the x-ray string with that title and place, then open the first ten results.
- For engineers, run the GitHub string for the same place and language.
- Paste the strongest profiles into a sheet with the link, the headline and one reason each fits.
Contact details are the slow part. Google and GitHub mostly stop at the profile link, and Pin's free plan covers 5 contact lookups a week, so budget time to find a way to reach each person.
Where Talent Summoner fits
Talent Summoner does that search for you: you describe the role, and it searches LinkedIn, GitHub and other public sources, then ranks each person against your must-haves with plain-English reasoning.
The first Role is free, with up to 50 candidates and no card. After that, Unlimited is $299 a month for up to 4 people ($59 per extra person) on fair use, Pro is $59 a month for 10 Roles, or a single Role is $29 and three are $79.
Trade-offs, stated plainly: no InMail, no always-on pipeline and no ATS integration today.
It searches public profiles, so it will not show CVs that job seekers uploaded to Indeed or Monster, and people with no public profile will not appear.
Already have a pile of CVs? Rank them instead.
When a paid resume database is worth it
Pay for Indeed or Monster when:
- you hire often for local or high-volume roles and want people who are actively looking, since Indeed's Professional plan lists a "recently active" filter;
- a team needs shared candidate lists and bulk messaging, which Indeed's plan lists, or saved searches with email alerts, which Monster's page lists;
- you want a monthly plan with no long-term commitment: Monster+ Pro is $299 a month, and its 299 credits expire monthly.
If your hiring is steady and tied to LinkedIn, see the LinkedIn Recruiter pricing guide and our Recruiter alternatives. To test a database first, Indeed's 14-day trial covers up to 5 contact invites for first-time users.
FAQ
Is there a free resume database?
Not a full one among the options we checked: Indeed's US guide describes previews, with contact typically on a subscription, and Monster lists Pro at $299 a month. The free routes are Google x-ray search, GitHub search and free tiers such as Pin's, which find public profiles rather than resumes.
How can employers search resumes for free?
Use Google x-ray strings for public LinkedIn profiles and GitHub qualifiers for engineers. Pin's free plan adds 3 candidate searches a day, and Talent Summoner's first Role is free, though it searches public profiles from a role brief rather than CVs.
Can I search resumes on Indeed for free?
Indeed's US guide says employers can search its resume database and preview profiles, but contacting people and advanced search typically need a Smart Sourcing or resume search subscription. Smart Sourcing Professional lists at $520 a month, and its 14-day trial covers up to 5 contact invites for first-time users, per the Indeed guide.
Which resume sites are actually free?
Google x-ray search and GitHub search cost nothing, but they find public profiles, not resumes. Indeed's US guide describes previews, with contact typically on a subscription, Monster lists resume search at $299 a month, and Pin and Talent Summoner offer free starts for profile search, not resume databases.
What does a resume database cost?
Monster bills 2 credits ($2) per resume view from the 299 credits in its $299 plan. Indeed includes 100 contacts a month then charges $5.20 per extra contact, and free routes cost your time instead.
